Oh Mary

I’ve been enchanted by Virgin Mary for a while, by the person and what she might embody.

Many could be inferred if we assume Virgin Mary is a real woman, and she was really pregnant and gave birth to a child who the people see as Christ. But of course, it’s scientifically impossible for a woman to get pregnant without having sex, which leads to my following hypothesis:

  1. The “pregnant virgin” part of the story is made up by men who are fascinated with the concept of motherhood, which is central to patriarchy, but hates how for a woman to be a mother, she must first “be a whore” by having sex. It is a fiction made up by people who cannot tolerate women’s sexuality but simultaneously enchanted by the power it brings to the patriarchs.

  2. Mary chose, out of her free will, to have sex, and got pregnant. Maybe she lied to other people, “I swear to God I’m a virgin! Like a proper woman, I’ve never came close to any man! This child… must be God’s divine will…”

  3. Mary was raped by a man, or many men. And when she sought out help, the people decided it would be too shameful for an unmarried young woman to be had sex with, because she would be considered “impure” and no man would marry her. So the people lied and told others that Mary is a virgin, and the child she’s carrying is the God’s child.

The gender of Mary’s child is also important. Let’s assume Mary herself or other people have already been telling around how this child she’s expecting is sent by God himself to bring salvation to humanity… what would happen if the Son of God, turns out to be the Daughter of God? Or a Gender-Neutral Child of God?

What if that “he” the people was expecting, turns out to be a “she,” or “they,” or “ze”?? Would people still see that child as “Christ?” And if that child turns out to be disabled, or deformed, will people say it’s the Devil’s Son? Would people suddenly accuse Mary of lying when they discover the child has a clit, and not a penis?

Or would they insist the girl (or the intersex child) is a boy and mutilate them just like how we mutilate intersex babies now? And maybe that’s why in most paintings and sculptures, the artists have covered Christ’s crotch with a piece of cloth, to hide the wound of mutilation?

We’ve never known what kind of woman Mary truly is. She played her part in the narrative: giving birth to a supposed God (who is then used and abused to justify for homophobe, transphobe, misogyny, slavery… the list goes on…). But besides that, we don’t know if she enjoyed that sex that made her pregnant with child.

People believed in God before the birth of Jesus Christ. Specially, Yahweh, the God of Hebrew Bible or what Christians call the Old Testament. Maybe Mary “swears to Yahweh” that she did not have sex (but she did), nevertheless, we’ll never know if she even believed in Yahweh. Or if she was just entertained by people’s obsession with God (Yahweh), she knew if she swears “by God”, her words will be taken as true.

And as Mary swore to the God she never believed in, what was happening in her mind? Mary, do you feel exhausted that for a woman’s words to be taken seriously, she has to associate herself with an all-powerful authoritative man whose existence is nothing more than a fiction, but her existence is a fact.

Maybe Mary is a REAL BAD BITCH who’s smart and cunning enough to turn their own tables against those misogynistically religious.

Or maybe, Mary is just as superstitious as the rest of them, but the sex is so good (I hope it’s good) that she didn’t even care if she’d go to hell by lying. I love this version the best, I love when Virgin Mary is not a virgin, but an unapologetic woman who people may call a whore.

Oh Mary Part II: Mary did you come?

Mary doesn’t look happy at all. Though it’s impossible to dictate that she has any negative feelings in those portraits, partly because of the artistic style, which I like to call “making people look
